Winter watering: thaw-day soaks for evergreens, and when frozen ground means stop

Evergreens do not shut the tap. Needles and broadleaf foliage keep losing water to winter sun and wind. When the soil is frozen, roots cannot replace that moisture. The brown you see in March is often winter desiccation — winter burn — that started weeks earlier. The job is not “run the irrigation all winter.” It is to send plants into freeze-up wet, then water only when the ground can actually take it.

Frozen ground is a stop, not a suggestion

Colorado State University Extension: water only when air and soil are above 40°F and there is no snow cover, preferably at midday so water can soak before night freeze. University of Minnesota Ask Extension: if the ground is still frozen, do not water trees even when a few days thaw above freezing. Air temperature on a thaw afternoon is not enough — the soil itself has to be unfrozen. See whether your region is in a freeze or thaw window.

Why evergreens burn in winter

Iowa State University Extension describes the mechanism cleanly: narrow- and broadleaf evergreens lose a lot of water through needles or leaves in winter, mainly from wind and bright sun. Once the ground freezes, roots can no longer absorb water. Foliage that loses more water than it can replace dries, browns, and dies. That is desiccation injury, also called winter burn. Damage happens in winter; the brown often waits until late winter or early spring to show.

University of Minnesota Extension adds two related injuries that look similar. Bright winter sun can warm foliage, start cellular activity, then drop temperature when the sun sets — injuring tissue. Chlorophyll in evergreen foliage is not re-synthesized when temperatures stay below 28°F, which bleaches the foliage. Cold snaps before plants have hardened off, or after new growth in spring, injure non-acclimated tissue. Watering does not fix a hardiness mismatch; it only addresses the moisture half of the problem.

Penn State Extension notes the same imbalance: frozen ground blocks uptake while sun, wind, and temperature swings keep pulling moisture. Damage is usually worst on tissue farthest from veins — leaf edges, needle tips, and the tops of plants — and on the side facing sun and wind. Rhododendrons curl leaves inward below about 20°F (thermonasty), which slows water loss; that is an adaptation, not a sign you should water frozen soil.

Which plants, and which exposures

Iowa State University Extension lists boxwood, rhododendron, arborvitae, and yew as the evergreens most susceptible to desiccation injury. Pines, spruces, and firs are also susceptible for several years after planting. University of Minnesota Extension flags yew, arborvitae, and hemlock as especially prone to winter browning, and notes injury on the south, southwest, and windward sides. Penn State Extension’s winter-burn list includes azalea, boxwood, rhododendron, mountain laurel, holly, fir, spruce, pine, yew, hemlock, arborvitae, juniper, and false cypress.

CSU Extension’s fall-and-winter watering fact sheet adds that plants getting reflected heat from buildings, walls, and fences — especially south or west exposures at winter sun angle — dry faster, as do windy sites. Newly seeded or sodded lawns, and lawns with south or west exposure, are also called out there; this guide’s job is evergreens, but the same thaw-day rules apply if you winter-water turf in a dry climate. Fall watering is the main prevention

University of Minnesota Extension’s winter-protection guide is blunt: keep evergreens watered through the growing season and into fall. Never stress plants by under- or overwatering. Decrease watering slightly in September to encourage hardening off, then water thoroughly in October until freeze-up. Watering only in late fall does not reduce injury. The same page says not to prune after August, because pruning can push new foliage.

Iowa State University Extension: deeply water susceptible evergreens in fall if the soil is dry, and continue on a regular basis until the ground freezes. That is especially important for evergreens planted in the last two or three years. Roots keep growing until the soil freezes; if weather is dry, keep watering newly planted trees until then.

University of Missouri Extension: if fall has been dry, water trees and shrubs well before the soil freezes. Even dormant deciduous plants keep losing water through bark and twigs. Periodic watering in fall and winter when the ground is not frozen can still help evergreens, which need water in the dormant season.

Time that last deep soak relative to first frostin your area — frost in the air is not the same as frozen soil, but it is the cue that freeze-up is coming. New trees planted in fall need a wet root ball going into winter; see fall tree planting.

When to water after freeze-up (thaw days)

After the ground has frozen hard, most of the Upper Midwest is done watering until spring thaw. Dry-winter regions are different. Colorado State University Extension’s fact sheet 7.211:

CSU Extension’s drought-watering page repeats October through April, one to two times per month for established trees, only when air is above 40°F and soil is not frozen. The same Garden Notes 657 guidance (watering mature shade trees) says to water woody plants monthly when natural precipitation from October through April is less than an inch per month; apply an inch of water on days above 40°F.

A CSU Extension horticulture note on winter watering (Office of Engagement, 2026) matches the fact sheet: evergreens and newly planted trees and shrubs one to two times per month in dry, warm spells; 10 gallons per inch of trunk diameter for young trees; shrubs 5–18 gallons per application; wet soil 12 inches deep; do not turn the buried irrigation system back on until freeze risk has passed — use a hose, then drain and disconnect it.

Utah State University Extension’s winter-desiccation page: keep watering evergreen plants as long as the ground is not frozen. Newly planted trees with limited root zones need water more often until roots establish.

None of those Interior West schedules license watering a frozen Minnesota or Iowa root zone on a 45°F afternoon. UMN Ask Extension (January 2025 drought follow-up): the ground was still frozen despite a few days above freezing; they would not water trees at that point.

New plantings versus established plants

Established evergreens in a snowy, soil-freezing climate still need that fall soak and mulch; they do not automatically need a January watering date. Established plants in a snowless Front Range winter are the ones CSU is writing the monthly schedule for.

Burlap screens and mulch — more agreement than sprays

Iowa State University Extension: reduce moisture loss with a screen that deflects wind or shades the plant. Use posts, woven wire, and burlap. Do not wrap burlap around the plant like a blanket. Set the screen at least 6 inches from the foliage. University of Missouri Extension: for newly planted or marginally hardy evergreens, build windbreaks on the south and west; screens should be 2 feet from the plants and tall enough to shade them from winter sun. Penn State Extension: stake 4- to 5-foot posts about 2 feet outside the drip line, hang burlap or canvas, leave the top open, do not stuff the enclosure with leaves (rodents), and take it down in spring when temperatures stay above 28°F.

Mulch is the other shared recommendation. UMN: 3–4 inches of shredded wood mulch in a donut, pulled about 6 inches off the trunk; a 4–6 inch layer is cited there for preventing frost heaving of new plantings. Penn State: 3–4 inches, off the root flare. Missouri: mulch increases moisture retention and shallows the frost line; it also buffers freeze–thaw that heaves shallow-rooted plants. Anti-desiccants: published caveats

This is the one topic where land-grant pages conflict, so the honest version is the conflict.

If you still use a product, follow the label — that is a pesticide-law point, not an efficacy claim. Do not treat a spray as a substitute for the fall soak, mulch, or a physical screen. We are not publishing brand names or mixing rates; none of the cited pages give a rate we can repeat.

If foliage already browned

University of Minnesota Extension: wait until mid-spring before pruning injured foliage. Buds are hardier than leaves; they often grow and fill in. If buds did not survive, prune dead wood back to living tissue. Fertilize injured plants in early spring and water well through the following season. Iowa State notes that damaged needles often stay green until late winter or early spring — so do not diagnose from a January glance alone.

FAQ

Should I water evergreens when the ground is frozen?
No. University of Minnesota Extension and Colorado State University Extension both treat frozen soil as a stop: water cannot reach roots, and it may run off or freeze at the surface. UMN Ask Extension is explicit that a few days of air temperatures above freezing do not help if the ground itself is still frozen.
How often should I water in winter?
It depends on whether the soil can actually take water. Colorado State University Extension, writing for dry Interior West winters, says to water during extended dry spells with no snow cover about one to two times per month, and only when air and soil are above 40°F. Iowa State University Extension’s winter-burn pages emphasize deep watering in fall and continuing until the ground freezes — they do not publish a mid-winter calendar for frozen-soil climates. If snow is covering the bed, CSU says skip the watering.
Which plants actually need winter watering?
Broadleaf and needled evergreens, because they keep foliage that still loses water. Iowa State University Extension lists boxwood, rhododendron, arborvitae, and yew as especially prone to desiccation injury; pines, spruces, and firs are also at risk for several years after planting. CSU adds that newly planted trees, plants on south or west exposures, and windy sites dry faster. Many native and xeric plantings in the West do not need winter irrigation, per CSU Extension.
Do new plantings need more winter water than established plants?
Yes. Iowa State University Extension: watering is especially important for evergreens planted in the last two or three years; small trees often need watering for one or two growing seasons, and large trees may need periodic watering for three or four years. Should I spray an anti-desiccant (anti-transpirant) on evergreens?
Cooperative Extension does not agree. University of Minnesota Extension states that anti-desiccant and anti-transpirant sprays are not effective for protecting evergreen foliage. University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension says those products should be avoided because they can flake off too soon or persist into the growing season and interfere with foliage gas exchange. Iowa State University Extension says applications may be helpful. University of Missouri Extension says anti-desiccants can provide some protection for broad-leaved evergreens or new plantings, that air temperature must be above 40°F at application, and that sprays must be repeated every six to eight weeks. Watering, mulch, and a burlap screen are the measures every one of these sources supports.
