First frost date by region: sprinklers, faucets, and what the calendar misses

First frost means cold has shown up. Pipe damage follows when water freezes in a line — often on a hard freeze above ground, or when the soil freezes down to buried irrigation. A single calendar date for “your region” is the wrong tool.

Frost is not hard freeze

NCEI and NC State use roughly 36°F for frost tables, 32°F for freeze, and 28°F for hard freeze. NWS hard-freeze products call out unprotected outdoor plumbing and undrained sprinklers.

What actually breaks the pipe

Colorado State University Extension: water contracts until about 39°F, then expands as it freezes toward 32°F — enough force to burst pipes, fittings, valves, sprinkler bodies and pumps. That is liquid water turning to ice inside the component, not the first white frost on the lawn.

Two failure modes matter for homeowners:

  1. Above-ground / in-wall: hose left on a frost-proof bib, water trapped in a backflow preventer, or an undrained outdoor faucet during a hard freeze (Illinois Extension; NWS hard-freeze plumbing note).
  2. Buried irrigation: water left in laterals when the ground freezes to pipe depth — Minnesota Extension: blow out before the ground freezes.

So the hub line is precise with a nuance: first frost is the warning light; hard freeze and ground freeze are the damage windows. Saying “only ground freeze breaks pipe” would undersell faucets and backflow assemblies that fail earlier.

Look up your place — don’t use our invented date

We do not publish a first-frost table for our 12 regions. Inventing those dates would be scaled content with a false precision. Use the same tools extensions use:

  1. NOAA/NCEI U.S. Climate Normals — frost/freeze probabilities (often 10% / 50% / 90%) for 36°F, 32°F and 28°F thresholds.
  2. weather.gov → your local NWS office → Climate / Past Observed Weather → first/last dates. Penn State’s hard-freeze winterizing note: pick the 28°F product when outdoor plumbing is the concern.

NC State on those normals: they are best guesses from past years — elevation and topography move the real night, and past trends are not a promise for this fall. NCEI’s own map write-up calls the charts a generalization, not absolute.

Is first frost the same as the first freeze?

Not always. NC State Extension, reading NCEI tables, associates frost risk with air near 36°F, freeze with 32°F, and hard freeze with about 28°F. Popular “first frost” talk often means the first 32°F night (NCEI/EPA growing-season language). Define which threshold you mean before you pick a deadline.

Does the first light frost break sprinkler pipes?

Are outdoor faucets and sprinklers the same job?
