How deep to water a lawn (and how often)

The depth that matters is where the water stops, not how long the controller runs. Every major land-grant university that publishes a lawn watering guide says the same thing: wet the soil 4–6 inches deep, then wait until the lawn shows stress before watering again.

Why shallow watering is the real problem

Most lawn watering mistakes come from watering too often, not too little. Penn State Extension states that frequent, shallow watering keeps the upper soil layers near a point of saturation, which encourages shallow rooting and promotes weak turf susceptible to disease and insect attack. Purdue Extension AY-7 is even more specific: daily light irrigations promote shallow rooting, non-drought-hardy turf, and encourage crabgrass.

Shallow roots depend entirely on what the top inch or two of soil holds. During a dry stretch, that layer dries out in hours — and the lawn wilts. Deep roots access stored moisture several inches down, which gives the grass days of buffer before it needs another drink.

The practical check: push a long screwdriver straight into the lawn immediately after watering. If it slides in 6 inches with little resistance, the root zone is adequately moistened. If it stops at 2–3 inches, either the zone ran too short or the soil is compacted and water is pooling above a hardpan. How often to water

Minnesota Extension's water-saving guidance says to irrigate once per week or less for an established lawn, assuming no significant rainfall. The exception is soil type:

When during the day

Purdue AY-7 lists 4 to 8 a.m. as the best window: water pressure is typically highest, wind is minimal, and evaporation loss is negligible. Minnesota Extension also recommends morning watering to reduce water lost to heat and wind.

Watering in the late evening leaves foliage wet overnight and creates conditions that favor disease. Midday watering is less effective because of evaporation loss — not because it "burns" the grass, which is a myth — but morning is still the better choice.

Dormancy: a legitimate option

If the season is dry and water conservation is a priority, letting the lawn go dormant is a sound choice. Purdue AY-7 explains that dormancy is a natural survival mechanism: the leaves die but the crown and root system remain alive. Most turfgrasses survive four to six weeks of dormancy without significant stand loss once rainfall or irrigation returns.

The key rule from Purdue: if you choose dormancy, apply 1 to 1½ inches of water every four to six weeks to keep the crowns and roots viable — not enough to force the grass out of dormancy, just enough to survive. Letting dormant grass break dormancy and then cutting off water again exhausts the plant and causes real damage.
