Core aeration: when to do it, why plug beats spike, and seeding right after
Core aeration pulls plugs of soil out of the lawn so air, water and roots can move again. Spike tools poke holes without removing soil — and several extensions say that can make compaction worse.
Seed the same day
Virginia Tech: lawns may be fertilized and seeded immediately following aeration. Maryland Extension: aerate just prior to seeding. The open holes are the seed-to-soil contact the overseeding guide keeps insisting on — not a commercial “48-hour window” without a land-grant citation.
Plug beats spike
- Core / plug — hollow tines pull soil out (Penn State, Virginia Tech, Purdue)
- Spike — no soil removed; extensions say it can worsen compaction
- Core / plug: hollow tines or spoons pull soil to the surface. Penn State describes tines about 3–4 inches long and ¼–¾ inch wide. Virginia Tech: cores often ½–¾ inch across, holes typically 1–6 inches deep and 2–6 inches apart.
- Spike / solid tine: Purdue AY-8: slicing or spiking removes no soil and is not considered aerification. Maryland and Virginia Tech: solid tines can contribute to compaction.

Do not core a dormant warm-season lawn (Maryland, NC State). Virginia Tech: skip aeration in the first year after seeding or sodding.

Does this lawn need it?
- Heavy traffic — paths, pets, play areas (Virginia Tech, Purdue).
- Thatch — Virginia Tech and Purdue flag thatch thicker than about ½ inch as a reason to aerate or dethatch; NC State uses about ¾ inch before power raking plus coring.
- Shallow roots / hard soil — Virginia Tech: roots only in the top 1–2 inches of a 6-inch sample; Minnesota turf notes a screwdriver that will not push about 3 inches as a compaction clue.
- Frequency — under heavy use, Virginia Tech suggests about once a year; Maryland’s established-lawn guidance is roughly yearly in autumn for high traffic, otherwise every 2–3 years. There is no single national interval.
How to run the pass
- Soil moist, not muddy. Virginia Tech: water thoroughly about two days prior (~1 inch) so tines can pull cores. Cornell: only slightly moist. Wet soil smears; bone-dry soil breaks tines and shallow-cores.
- Multiple directions. Penn State’s overseeding advice includes six to eight passes when you want a dense hole pattern for seeding. At least two directions is the usual minimum elsewhere.
- Leave the plugs. They dry, crumble and work back into the canopy in roughly two to four weeks (Virginia Tech). Rake or mow to break them up once dry (Penn State, NC State).
- Seed and water immediately after if overseeding — see rates in grass seed rates and the calculator.
Purdue targets roughly 2–3 inches of tine penetration and about 20–40 holes per square foot when the pattern is dense enough to matter.

When should I aerate a cool-season lawn?
Late summer into early fall is the main window — Virginia Tech lists late August to mid-September for Virginia; Minnesota Extension late August to early October; Purdue September or April for bluegrass, fescue and ryegrass. Penn State also allows early to mid-spring, with the caveat that spring can bring more weed seed.
When should I aerate bermudagrass or zoysia?
Late spring or early to mid-summer while the grass is actively growing. Virginia Tech puts bermuda and zoysia aeration in June and July. NC State: core warm-season grasses in late spring or early summer — not while dormant.
Is spike aeration the same as core aeration?
No. Penn State and Purdue say solid tines or spikes are not core aerification. Virginia Tech and Maryland Extension warn that spikes can contribute to compaction by pushing soil aside instead of removing it.
How soon after aeration should I seed?

Should I remove the plugs?
Leave them. Virginia Tech says work plugs back into the lawn over two to four weeks; Maryland says they break down in a couple of weeks. Breaking dried plugs apart with a rake or mower helps them disappear faster (Penn State).
