Fertilizing a cool-season lawn: nitrogen by the year, not by the bag

The bag sells you product. The lawn eats nitrogen, on a schedule that is not the same as the calendar on the store display.

Late summer is the feeding that counts

Penn State calls late summer the most important application of the year: the grass is recovering from heat, storing carbohydrates, and putting on roots — not a flush of leaf that you then have to mow twice a week. In Pennsylvania that window is early to mid-September. Farther north it slides earlier; farther south, later. Midsummer heat is not a substitute date.

When, in order of importance

  1. Late summer. Early to mid-September in Pennsylvania. Slightly higher nitrogen rates are acceptable here; if a single pass goes above 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft, use a product with a high share of slow-release nitrogen.
  2. Late fall. Leaf growth has slowed or stopped, the grass is still green, and the soil is not frozen — mid-November in most of Pennsylvania. This feeding can replace an early-spring application. Skip quick-release nitrogen on sandy soils; leaching is the documented risk.
  3. Mid- to late spring. Needed if you skipped late fall, or as a second spring pass. Penn State's early-spring rate is 0.5–0.75 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft so you get color without a flush of leaf; late May to early June can take 0.75–1 lb, preferably with some slow-release nitrogen.

Two or more applications a year are the baseline for a lawn you actually want to look at. One dump in April is the program that burns turf and sends the rest into runoff.

How much nitrogen in a year

There is no reliable soil test for nitrogen on turf. The rate comes from the species and how hard you manage the lawn. These are Penn State's annual ranges, in pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet:

Use the high end on new stands, poor soil, heavy traffic, or when you bag clippings. Use the low end on older turf in decent soil with clippings returned — returning clippings can cut nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium needs by up to one-third. Fine fescue at 3–4 lb of nitrogen a year is too much: Penn State notes more drought, heat stress and disease, not a prettier lawn.

Bermudagrass, zoysia and other warm-season lawns use the opposite calendar — nitrogen after spring green-up, stop by mid-August in much of the Southeast. See fertilizing warm-season turf.

Per application is not per year. A high-maintenance pass is typically 1.0 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft; a low-maintenance pass is half that. The calculator turns that target into pounds of the bag you actually bought.

What the three numbers mean

Nitrogen, phosphate, potash — always in that order, as percent by weight. A 26-5-10 bag is 26% nitrogen. Penn State's worked example: 1.0 lb of nitrogen ÷ 0.26 = 3.8 lb of that product per 1,000 sq ft. Read the first number, not the weight of the bag.

Phosphorus and potassium follow a soil test, not a habit. If the test says they are already high, buy a nitrogen-only product. If phosphate is needed, keep a single pass in the same band as nitrogen (0.5–1 lb per 1,000 sq ft, or slightly higher at 1.5–2 lb) and never above 5 lb of phosphate per 1,000 sq ft in one application. Potash, when needed: 0.5–2 lb per 1,000 sq ft.

How to put it down

  1. Measure the lawn, not the lot. Subtract beds, patio and driveway so you are not fertilizing concrete.
  2. Convert nitrogen to product with the bag analysis. That is the calculator.
  3. Calibrate the spreader. The dial on the bag is a starting guess. Penn State publishes a strip-and-weigh procedure; walking speed and granule size change the rate more than the printed setting does.
  4. Split the pass — half the product in one direction, half at ninety degrees — so you do not paint stripes of burn next to stripes of nothing.
  5. Keep it off hard surfaces. Sweep what lands on the sidewalk back onto the turf. Nitrogen that washes into a storm drain is the contamination Penn State is writing about, not a theoretical one.

Where this sits in the fall

Late-summer feeding lands in the same season as overseeding. They are not the same bag. If you are seeding, use the starter rate for that job and do not stack a full maintenance feeding on top of it in the same week.

Returning clippings all year does part of this job for free. Mulching leaves into the lawn in October and November is the same idea with a different feedstock. Irrigation still has to be cleared before the ground freezes — that deadline is the frost, not this feeding.
