Sump pump testing: how often, how to check it, and when to call a pro

A sump pump only earns its keep when groundwater rises — which is also when power may fail and when a stuck float is hardest to forgive. The published cadence is simple: assess it once a year, and again before the season that loads it.

Two published triggers — not a quarterly myth

FEMA: assess the pump once a year (and clean the intake screen more than once a year). NDSU / SDSU Extension: check before spring melt or before flood season. Commercial “test every three months” calendars are not in those sources — we do not invent them here.

How to test safely

  1. Confirm the outdoor discharge is clear and aimed away from the foundation (NDSU, SDSU).
  2. With power off / unplugged: SDSU — inspect the intake visually and by touch for debris. FEMA’s deeper annual service also starts with the breaker off and the plug pulled before you remove the pump.
  3. Restore power and run a wet test: FEMA — pour a bucket of water into the pit; the pump should start. NDSU — lift the float ~10 seconds if the pit is dry, or fill with water; confirm on/off at least twice. SDSU — fill slowly, listen about 10 seconds for abnormal noise; repeat at least once.

If you hear gravel-like grinding, the float sticks, or the pump struggles, NDSU and SDSU treat that as a service or replacement signal — not something to “wait out” until the next storm.

Power outages and battery backup

Ready.gov and the American Red Cross recommend considering a sump pump with battery backup for flood-prone homes. ReduceFloodRisk (FEMA-linked mitigation guidance) flags power failure as a primary risk. NDSU: maintain the backup battery; check voltage about every six months.

Where the water must go

SDSU Extension: do not discharge into the municipal sewer or into a septic drainfield. Prefer discharge at least 20 feet from the house when possible so water does not loop back to the foundation. When FEMA says replace

New owners unfamiliar with the system: NDSU suggests a licensed plumber before spring melt. New installs of pit and piping may need a permit and a licensed waterproofing plumber (ReduceFloodRisk).

Stop — electrical and flood safety

Do not DIY past these lines:

  • • Standing water around the pump or panel — CDC: never operate electrical switches or tools while standing in water
  • • You would have to enter water to reach the breaker — call an electrician
  • • Wet equipment after a flood — de-energize from a dry location; do not re-energize until a qualified electrician inspects
  • • Generator power — CDC: never run a gasoline generator indoors, in a basement, or in a garage; keep it well away from openings

Is it safe to work in a flooded pit?

No. CDC flood-safety guidance: never turn electrical equipment on or off while standing in water. Shut power off only from a dry location. If you would have to enter standing water to reach the panel, call an electrician. That is a hard stop, not a DIY stretch goal.
