Gutter cleaning: how often, and where the water should end up

A clogged gutter is not a gutter problem. It is a foundation problem that has not arrived yet — and the second half of the job, where the water goes after the downspout, is the half most people skip.

How often

The floor is once a year: inspect gutters and downspouts to confirm they are still fastened to the house and not leaking, which is the University of Georgia Extension's baseline. Above that floor, frequency is set by what is over your roof, not by a rule. Overhanging trees mean cleaning more than once a year, and a long leaf drop usually means twice in the fall — once mid-season, once after the last leaves are down.

If you are already outside mulching leaves into the lawn, that is the natural moment to look up.

Where the water should end up

A clear gutter that dumps at the base of the wall has moved the problem three feet, not solved it. Department of Energy building science guidance is to carry roof water either:

Splash blocks and short extensions are the common half-measure. Water that soaks in beside the wall shows up later as a wet basement, a damp crawl space, or rot in the siding and trim.

Working from the ground with a hose extension or a leaf blower attachment is the middle option, and it is a real one for a single-story house.

Questions people actually ask

How often should gutters be cleaned?

At minimum, inspect gutters and downspouts once a year to confirm they are attached and not leaking. Houses with trees overhead need cleaning more often than that — twice in the fall is common where oaks or pines drop over a long season.

How far from the house should a downspout discharge?

What happens if I never clean them?

Water leaves the roofline where it was not meant to. That means saturated soil against the foundation, wet basements and crawl spaces, and rot in woodwork and siding — repairs that dwarf the cost of the cleaning.

Is it safe to do myself?

The gutter is not the danger; the ladder is. OSHA's setup rules exist because ladders sliding out at the base are the leading cause of ladder injuries. If the roofline is above single-story height, if the ground is soft or sloped, or if you would be working alone, this is worth paying for.

Do gutter guards mean I never clean again?

No. They reduce how much lands in the trough, but fine debris still gets through and guards themselves need clearing. They change the frequency, not the need to look.
