HVAC filters: how often to change one, and which one to buy

It is the cheapest maintenance in the house and the one most likely to be six months overdue. Three things decide it: how often you look, what rating you buy, and getting the size right on the first try.

How often

Check monthly, change at three months at the latest. That is ENERGY STAR's guidance, and the split matters: monthly is when you look, three months is the outside limit before it goes regardless. A filter that is grey and matted at week five is done at week five.

Things that shorten the interval: pets, running the fan continuously, construction or sanding anywhere nearby, a dusty return. Nothing lengthens it except an empty house.

A dirty filter restricts airflow, so the system runs longer and works harder for the same temperature — ENERGY STAR's own framing. You pay for that twice, in the bill and in wear.

Which rating

MERV rates how well a filter captures particles between 0.3 and 10 microns, on a scale of 1 to 16 before you reach HEPA territory. EPA's recommendation for homes is at least MERV 13, or as high as your fan and filter slot can accommodate. Most residential systems handle MERV 13 fine — provided it gets changed on schedule, because higher-rated media loads up faster.

If the system is old, or you have ever been told it struggles for airflow, EPA's own note applies: ask an HVAC technician what the highest filter your equipment tolerates is.

Nominal size versus actual size

This is where people buy the wrong box. Filters are sold at a nominal size rounded up from the real dimensions — a nominal 16x25x1 is closer to 15.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 in the flesh. Measure the old filter, buy what the tape said, and it will not fit.

Read the numbers printed on the cardboard frame of the one you are replacing. If the frame is unreadable, measure and round up to the nearest common size.

Getting it in right

Where it lands in the year

The filter has no season — that is the point of checking monthly. But the two moments people actually remember are the first cold snap and the first hot week, when the system starts running hard. Pair the fall filter swap with the heating tune-up — combustion checks are not the filter job — and the other frost-deadline work: gutters, dryer vent, outdoor faucets and sprinkler winterization.

Questions people actually ask

How often should I change my HVAC filter?

ENERGY STAR's guidance is to check it every month and change it whenever it looks dirty, with a hard floor of every three months. The interval on the box is an average; yours depends on pets, dust, construction nearby and how much the fan runs.

What MERV rating should I buy?
