White grubs in lawns: damage, timing, and treatment windows
The window to treat grubs effectively is short, and it is determined by the grub's age — not the date on the calendar. Most homeowners find out they had grubs after the damage is already done. This guide covers what to look for, when to look, and what the numbers mean.
What white grubs are
White grubs are the larval stage of scarab beetles — most commonly the Japanese beetle and masked chafer in the eastern United States. Annual species complete one generation per year: adults emerge in late June through July, lay eggs in the soil, eggs hatch in late July, and the resulting grubs feed on grass roots through the fall before overwintering deep in the ground.
Some species (several May/June beetle species) are semi-annual or multi-annual, taking 2–3 years to complete development. Purdue Extension notes this distinction matters for timing: multi-year species may not respond to the same preventive windows as annual species.
All grub species damage lawns the same way — they chew off roots just below the soil surface. University of Kentucky Extension describes the result: the turf loses its ability to take up water and nutrients, making it unable to withstand heat and drought. The worst visible damage typically appears in late August through October.
Lifecycle and why timing matters
The diagram below maps the annual species lifecycle against the two classes of treatment. The key insight from Ohio State and Cornell IPM: first-instar grubs in August are the most vulnerable. They are small, near the surface, and have not yet had time to damage the turf significantly. Once they reach the third instar (September onward), they grow progressively more resistant to insecticides, and by the time they burrow deep for winter, treatment is essentially pointless.
- Preventive ★ — apply June–July (neonicotinoids) or April–mid-July (chlorantraniliprole); water in with ½ inch immediately
- Curative (early) — August; grubs are small, near the surface, most susceptible
- Rescue (late curative) — late August to early September; expect <75% control as grubs enlarge

How to scout: count before you treat
Both Cornell IPM and Ohio State Extension recommend sampling in early to mid-August — early in the grub's life so populations can be assessed while treatment is still effective. On Long Island, Cornell advises scouting in early August; upstate New York, mid-August.
How to sample: Use a shovel or lawn edger to cut three sides of a one-square-foot section. Lift the flap of turf and count all white C-shaped larvae in the top 2–3 inches of soil and on the underside of the flap. Repeat in several spots — especially in full-sun areas on south- or west-facing slopes, which Ohio State identifies as the most common grub "hot spots."

Healthy, well-irrigated turf can often tolerate 5–8 per square foot without visible damage. Cornell's turfgrass program notes only about 20% of home lawns in upstate New York actually require treatment. Spot-treat the areas above threshold rather than blanket-treating the whole lawn.
The tug test offers a secondary confirmation: grip the turf canopy with both hands and pull. Where roots have been severed by grub feeding, the turf rolls back like a carpet, often with grubs visible underneath. Ohio State ENT-0107 describes this as useful verification once an infestation is already suspected.
The soil temperature angle
Grub timing tracks soil temperature closely. Ohio State's Japanese beetle factsheet (ENT-46) notes that overwintered grubs resume feeding near the surface whensoil temperature reaches approximately 60–65°F — typically mid-April in Ohio. Adult beetles emerge from the ground in late June through July. Egg development takes 8–9 days at 80–90°F soil temperature and up to 30 days at 65°F.

Treatment windows
Preventive treatments
Preventive insecticides work on small, newly hatched larvae before damage occurs. The general window for annual species is May through mid-July, but the right timing within that range depends on the active ingredient.
- Chlorantraniliprole (anthranilic diamide): ApplyApril through mid-July. This active ingredient moves slowly through the soil, so MSU Extension research shows applications before June are more efficacious than June or July applications — the product has more time to migrate into the root zone before eggs hatch. University of Kentucky Extension cautions this isnot a curative product; use it only preventively.
- Neonicotinoids (imidacloprid, clothianidin, thiamethoxam): ApplyJune through July. MSU Extension advises against applying these in spring: applied too early, they may leach through the soil or partially degrade before grubs hatch in late July, leaving insufficient residual at the critical moment.
For all preventive products: water in with ½ inch of irrigation immediately after application. OSU ENT-0107 and UKY ENT-10 both make this non-negotiable — the product needs to move into the root zone to intercept hatching larvae.
Read the label before purchasing anything
This guide does not recommend specific product brands as "best." Active ingredients and their registered uses vary by state and change over time; the label is the legal instruction and overrides any general advice, including this page. Check with your local cooperative extension office for products registered in your state. Long Island, NY restricts imidacloprid to certified pesticide applicators.
Curative treatments
Curative products have a short residual window (typically 2–3 weeks, per UKY ENT-10) and must connect with actively feeding grubs near the surface. University of Kentucky Extension puts the optimal curative timing at early to mid-August, when grubs are still small.
- August: Best curative window. First-instar grubs are small, feeding at the surface, and most susceptible to insecticides.
- Late August to early September: Grubs are growing into the second and third instars. UKY ENT-10 notes control becomes progressively harder; expect no better than 75% reduction. Cornell IPM lists trichlorfon and beneficial nematodes as viable options at this stage.
- After late September: Most grubs have moved deeper in the soil in response to cooling temperatures and are out of the treatment zone. OSU ENT-0107 and Cornell IPM advise against curative applications after this point.
Water in curative products with ½ to 1 inch of irrigation as soon as possible after application. UKY ENT-10 notes that soil moisture also draws grubs closer to the surface, improving insecticide contact.
Why spring treatments fail
Cornell IPM, Ohio State, and MSU Extension all reach the same conclusion: treating for grubs in spring is a waste of time and money. The overwintered grubs are in their largest (third) instar, largely resistant to insecticides, and only briefly near the surface before pupating. Any damage visible in spring is the result of fall feeding — there is nothing to control at that point, and insecticide applied then does not protect against the current year's generation.
Cultural practices that reduce pressure
- Withhold irrigation in July when adult beetles are laying eggs. Japanese beetles prefer moist soil for egg-laying. Allowing soil to dry during peak egg-laying can reduce hatch — though this is not always practical in drought conditions.
- Maintain dense, healthy turf. A well-fertilized lawn with a robust root system tolerates higher grub populations before showing damage. Cornell's turfgrass program notes that irrigated lawns may tolerate 6–8 per square foot.
- Mow and dethatch before applying insecticide. UKY ENT-10 recommends removing dead grass and reducing thatch to less than ½ inch before treatment — thick thatch binds insecticides and reduces the amount that reaches the root zone.
- Beneficial nematodes. Steinernema and Heterorhabditisspecies can reduce grub populations when applied to moist soil in late summer. Cornell IPM lists them as the least toxic option in August. They require consistent soil moisture and careful storage/handling — follow the supplier's instructions.
When to call a professional
Consider contacting a licensed pest control operator if:
- You confirm populations above 10 grubs/sq ft across a large portion of your lawn for two or more consecutive years — persistent infestations may require a different strategy than a single-season treatment.
- You are in a jurisdiction with restricted-use product requirements (e.g., Long Island, NY, where Cornell IPM notes imidacloprid may only be applied by a certified applicator).
- You cannot identify the grub species and suspect a non-annual type that falls outside standard timing windows.
Do not apply insecticide at rates above the label. Higher rates do not improve control and increase chemical load on soil, groundwater, and non-target organisms.
Questions people actually ask
How do I know if grubs are actually killing my lawn?
Dig a one-square-foot section of turf in the damaged area — use a spade or a lawn edger. Count the white C-shaped larvae in the top 2–3 inches of soil. Ohio State Extension puts the action threshold at 10 or more per square foot for annual species such as Japanese beetles; University of Kentucky and Cornell IPM use 8–10 per square foot. A few grubs per square foot is normal and not a reason to treat.
When should I apply a preventive grub insecticide?

Do spring grub treatments work?
No. Cornell IPM and Ohio State both call spring treatments a waste of time and money. The overwintered grubs are in their third, largest instar, feeding only briefly before pupating, and are largely resistant to insecticides at this stage. The damage you see in spring is from last fall's feeding — there is nothing to control at that point.
Can I use milky spore?
Milky spore (Bacillus popilliae) is effective only on Japanese beetle grubs, not on masked chafers or other common species. It requires multiple years of application to establish in the soil. Cornell IPM lists it as the least toxic option for Japanese beetle specifically, but recommends identifying your grub species before relying on it.
Why do skunks and raccoons dig up my lawn?
They are hunting the grubs. Animal digging is a sign worth investigating, but Ohio State Extension cautions it is not reliable on its own — animals also dig for earthworms and other insects. Confirm grub counts by sampling before treating; blanket applications based solely on animal activity often treat lawns that do not need it.
My neighbor applied in May and it seemed to work. Was that a preventive?
If they used chlorantraniliprole, yes — it can be applied from April through mid-July and is still effective because it moves slowly through the soil. If they used a neonicotinoid (imidacloprid, clothianidin, thiamethoxam) in May, there is some risk it partially degraded before the late-July hatch. MSU Extension advises June–July as the optimal window for neonicotinoid-based preventives.
