Fall snow blower prep: fuel, fluids, and safety before the first storm

The first wet snow of the season is a bad time to discover stale gas, a dead battery, or a jammed chute. Cooperative Extension and the CPSC put the work in late fall — and the injury pattern shows why.

Dig it out before you need it

Illinois Extension’s late-fall yard list pairs the snow blower with fresh gas and stabilizer — modern fuel ages in a few months. Nebraska Extension’s older snow-removal sheet: about half of equipment accidents involve first-time operators or the first use of the season. Prep now, not in the storm.

Fuel that will still start in January

Illinois Extension: gasoline goes stale after a few months, so put fresh gas plus stabilizer in the snow blower you expect to use, then run the engine long enough for treated fuel to reach the carburetor. That is the winter-use path — different from parking a mower empty until spring.

For long idle, other extensions still publish the empty-tank option: Mississippi State (≥2 months without use) lists drain-and-run-dry, stabilizer, or a monthly ~10-minute run on a little fresh fuel. UGA Extension prefers ethanol-free fuel when you can get it; if you only have E10, use stabilizer, and for long storage empty the tank and carburetor. K-State’s ethanol fact sheet (MF3068): ethanol blends typically last about 90–100 days on the shelf versus years for straight gasoline; E15 is not legal in small nonroad engines. Oklahoma State: many manufacturers allow E10, but without stabilizer do not store gasoline more than about 60 days — beyond that, drain.

Those shelf-life windows disagree by a month; treat them as published ranges, not a single magic day, and follow the bottle and the owner’s manual when they conflict.

Oil, plug, battery, free-turning auger

Utah State Extension’s snow-removal safety sheet: before you operate, check the oil level, fuel up, and make sure rotors, augers and impellers turn freely. UGA: check oil with use and plan an annual oil change on garden equipment unless the manual says otherwise. Iowa State: some machines change oil once a year, others in spring — the manual wins. Mississippi State: changing oil before storage (and cleaning the air filter) improves the next start. Nebraska Extension notes multi-season units may need a lighter winter oil grade for cold starts — again, match the manual.

Spark plugs: Iowa State says check or replace every 1–3 years; a fresh plug makes cold starts easier. Mississippi State includes plug replacement in pre-storage service. UGA: inspect for fouling, oil, cracked porcelain and gap. Before any clearing or repair, Utah State: shut down and disconnect the spark-plug wire.

Electric start: Nebraska Extension — keep the battery well charged. Penn State’s farm-equipment winter sheet: a discharged battery can freeze; clean terminals; for storage, disconnect and keep warm or on a float charger when needed. Their published storage target for a 12-volt battery is about 14.4 volts — farm context, useful as a charge-health check, not a snow-blower-specific warranty number. Corded electric models (Utah State): inspect the extension cord, grounding and the ground pin before the season.

Belts, shear pins, scrapers — manual first

K-State’s AgSafe snow-blower evaluation checklist (written for commercial / rotary-plow contexts) still names the wear items that jam homeowners too: belts tight and intact, shear pins of the size and grade in the manual, skate shoes installed correctly. Residential Cooperative Extension almost never publishes scraper blade or skid-shoe clearances for walk-behind blowers. Be honest about that gap: inspect those parts, replace what is worn, and take sizes from your manual — do not invent a homeowner interval from a DOT checklist.

If the machine has tires, UGA says check correct pressure (no residential PSI published). Penn State: pressure falls about 1 PSI per 10°F temperature drop — check again when the cold arrives.

STOP — chute, CO, fueling

The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s winter releases put the injury pattern in numbers: more than 4,200 emergency-room injuries related to snow blowers in 2021 (2023 release), and more than 4,700 in the year cited by the 2024 release; hand, wrist and finger injuries were about 40% and 36% of those cases in the respective releases. Most happen while clearing a clogged chute.
