Chimney inspection before the first fire

The flue is a chimney’s only job: take combustion products out of the house. Creosote in that flue is fuel. A blockage is a carbon monoxide path. The published rule is an inspection every year — and it happens before you burn, not after the first cold weekend.

STOP: carbon monoxide and chimney fire

Carbon monoxide is odorless. CPSC calls it the invisible killer and lists cracked, blocked, or creosote-coated chimneys among fireplace fire and CO causes. If anyone feels ill, if a CO alarm sounds, or if you see indoor smoke — get outside and call 911. Portland Fire’s chimney-fire signs: a loud roar, sucking sounds, shaking pipes, hot spots on the wall or chimney, or smoke in the house. Shut off the fire’s air supply only if you can do it on the way out; then leave. Do not keep burning “to finish the fire.” After a chimney fire, CSIA’s Level II inspection is the next professional step — not another DIY fire.

Why this is an annual job

CSIA publishes this sentence from NFPA 211, Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances: “Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.” CSIA’s reason for “even if you hardly burn” is animals nesting in the flue and ordinary deterioration. Minnesota’s Weatherization Assistance Program chimney guidance uses the same NFPA 211 visual check for solid-fuel appliances, venting, and chimneys.

EPA Burn Wise, citing NFPA data, says three of every ten house fires caused by home heating are due to poorly maintained fireplaces and dirty chimneys. Portland Fire, citing NFPA (2014–2018): local fire departments responded to an estimated average of 48,530 heating-equipment fires each year; the leading factor contributing to home heating fires (25%) was failure to clean, principally from solid-fueled heating equipment, primarily chimneys. CPSC estimates fireplaces and chimneys were involved in an average of 15,400 fires per year, with an average of 20 deaths and 80 injuries annually from 2019 to 2021.

What you are looking at

Wood smoke is unfinished combustion. EPA: when that smoke hits a cooler chimney it condenses as creosote — a highly combustible black or brown residue. CSIA describes the same deposit as crusty and flaky, tar-like and sticky, or shiny and hardened — often all in one flue. CSIA puts masonry chimney-fire temperatures around 2,000°F, hot enough to melt mortar, crack tiles, collapse liners, and damage outer masonry. Factory-built metal chimneys used with wood stoves are typically tested to withstand flue temperatures up to 2,100°F without damage; CSIA still says a fire-damaged prefab chimney should no longer be used and must be replaced.

Ask the sweep which level they are performing. If they do not know what a Level I inspection is, CSIA’s homeowner FAQ says to find one who does.

DIY vs chimney sweep

You can confirm alarms, the damper, and whether the firebox looks glazed or sooty. You cannot see the smoke chamber or the upper flue from the hearth with a flashlight in any complete way — CSIA’s “the sweep only brushed the firebox brick” complaint is exactly that failure. Mechanical sweeping of the flue and smoke chamber is the CSIA method; powders sold as chimney cleaners are not a substitute.

Published deposit triggers (not prices):

Those two thickness numbers are both published. We do not pick a third “national DIY” number. Glazed (shiny, hardened) creosote is a professional problem — CSIA describes chemicals used by sweeps to change glaze so a brush can remove it, not a homeowner product replacing the inspection.

Wood stove, fireplace, and gas

Creosote is a wood (and other solid-fuel) problem. EPA lists restricted air, unseasoned wood, a cooler-than-normal chimney, and overloading a wood stove firebox as the conditions that grow it. EPA Burn Wise: check wood moisture; a moisture content of less than 20 percent is best. Split, stack, cover, and store firewood for six months if it is a softwood, and at least one year for hardwoods.

Penn State Extension: open fireplaces are usually less than 20 percent efficient and are not really recommended for heating; newer wood stoves and inserts are about 60 percent efficient. EPA-certified stoves, EPA says, can use up to one-third less firewood than an older, less efficient stove, and they cut creosote build-up compared with old uncertified units. Fireplaces themselves are not EPA-certified as wood heaters.

Gas appliances still share the chimney’s other failure mode: blockage. CSIA wants gas chimneys on the same annual calendar. Pair that visit with the heating-system tune-up on HVAC service if a furnace uses the same chimney or a nearby flue — CPSC lists furnaces and chimneys on one annual inspection sentence. Dryer exhaust is a different duct; do not confuse it with the chimney, but it is the same season’s lint-and-vent check on dryer vent cleaning.

Fall timing

Portland Fire: inspect before the heating season begins; clean if necessary. That is before first fire, not “sometime in winter.” Put it on the same fall pass as the October checklist. Confirm smoke and CO alarm placement while the sweep is on site — CPSC wants CO alarms on each level and outside sleeping areas, and they are not a substitute for a clear flue.

How often should a chimney be inspected?

At least once a year. CSIA quotes NFPA 211: chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances, with cleaning, maintenance, and repairs done if necessary. CPSC tells homeowners to have a professional inspect fuel-burning heating systems — including fireplaces, wood stoves, chimneys, flues, and vents — each year. EPA Burn Wise says the same for wood-burning appliances. CSIA notes the yearly look still applies if you barely use the fireplace: animals nest in flues and masonry deteriorates anyway.

When in the year should I schedule it?

Before the first fire of the heating season — not after you have already burned. Portland Fire tells homeowners to have the chimney inspected by a professional prior to the start of every heating season and cleaned if necessary, and to inspect wood-stove connections and flues at the beginning of each heating season. That lines up with CPSC’s winter heating reminder to inspect chimneys and flues annually. Our October checklist is a practical reminder, not a substitute for that inspection.

What is a Level I vs Level II vs Level III inspection?

Those labels come from NFPA 211, which CSIA trains sweeps to use. CSIA: a Level I inspection is the recommended level during routine chimney cleanings and annual inspections when nothing is changing — readily accessible portions of the appliance and chimney (no tools required to open covers; no ladders required for “readily accessible”). A Level II inspection is for changed conditions: a new or dissimilar appliance, a different fuel, lining or relining, sale or transfer of the property, or after a building or chimney fire, weather or seismic event, or operating malfunction likely to have damaged the chimney. CSIA’s Level II masonry-fireplace SOP also includes roof access, accessible attics, basements, and crawl spaces, and a video scan of the flue interior. A Level III inspection is for concealed areas when a less invasive inspection cannot determine serviceability — it can require opening building materials. We do not quote NFPA’s paid PDF here; we use CSIA’s public summaries.

What can I check myself, and what needs a chimney sweep?

Homeowner work CSIA and EPA actually describe: look up into the fireplace with a flashlight and confirm the damper is fully open before lighting; after a fire has been burning about 20 minutes, go outside and look at the chimney — smoke there means wet wood, not enough air, or a stove and chimney that need maintenance (EPA Burn Wise). CPSC work: working CO alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas, and smoke alarms on every level and inside bedrooms. A CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep (or similar certified professional — EPA also names NFI) does the annual inspection, mechanical sweeping, and any camera or Level II/III work. CSIA is explicit that chemical chimney “cleaners” are not a substitute for mechanical sweeping and inspection. Climbing the roof, brushing glazed creosote, and deciding whether a liner is cracked are sweep jobs.

Do gas fireplaces and gas furnaces still need a chimney inspection?

Yes. CSIA: although gas is generally a clean-burning fuel, the chimney can become non-functional from bird nests or other debris blocking the flue, and modern furnaces can have problems when vented through flues intended for older equipment — schedule annual inspections for all chimneys, gas furnaces included. CPSC’s annual professional inspection list includes furnaces, fireplaces, wood and gas stoves, chimneys, flues, and vents because blocked or defective venting is a carbon monoxide path.

How is a wood stove different from an open fireplace?

Penn State Extension: open fireplaces are so inefficient (usually less than 20 percent) that they are not really recommended for heating today; wood stoves and fireplace inserts provide a more efficient way to heat with wood, with newer stoves and inserts around 60 percent efficient. EPA: fireplaces are not certified as wood heaters under EPA’s stove rules; certified wood stoves are designed to burn more of the smoke. Creosote still forms in both wood systems when smoke condenses in a cooler flue (EPA, CSIA). A wood stove’s air inlets closed too far, unseasoned wood, and overloading the firebox all speed creosote (EPA). Penn State: keep the combustion zone hot — at least 600°C (1,100°F) — so gases burn instead of smoldering into the flue.
